Well in the Mario universe it hasn't really been that long, since he's always been the same age. And he's a fat old guy getting good looking princesses (and Pauline) that isn't rich, sounds good to me.
Also, for some reason, in Paper Mario, many more girls like him, I think in Paper Mario 2, EVERY single female partner he obtains ends up loving him.
