Yeah, Best Buy had a setup with glasses and a demo reel of 3DTV, and I actually got to try it out. Seeing the TV in 3D mode without glasses is like watching an old 3D movie, it's all blurry. The second you put it on, you can see it. Nothing really seems to come out at your face, but it does add some depth to the picture.

But yeah, it looks okay. I'm eager to see if I see similar things with the 3DS.

So...it's basically a waste of money then?

Oh, but wait, you can watch CLASH OF THE TITANS IN SHITTY 3D VISION AT HOME NOW! *slaps down 2000 dollars* SOLD MY FRIEND!

I watched our store's demo one for like 10 seconds before the Black Eyed Peas came on it. This was reason enough never to buy a 3D TV.

Put it in your back pocket.
Sit down and it breaks.

I'll have to try it out, but I really doubt it will ever catch on.

Never seen a demo of a 3DTV, but I wouldn't buy one. It's just not worth it.

This.

I don't think they could make a more obvious gimmick.

3D has been around for years, why would they suddenly start selling all this 3D crap? It's cool in movies, but watching it all the time at home seems a little nauseating.

Also, can't any tv show 3D? Didn't the Grammy's or something have a 3D Michael Jackson tribute?

It might be for general TV, so that ANYTHING viewed can be 3D.

Still stupid though.

Eh....I'll just wait until there's hologram televisions. :/

The "why" is quite simple. It's proprietary technology that the movie and TV industries wants to schlep off on everyone else because they feel like their form of media is being marginalized (and with the Internet, well, it kinda is).

Companies jump on the bandwagon because they want to take the money of idiot early adopters of new technology.

taken to da limit

Apparently, 3D effects are not very good as in quality. Always come out blury n unclear. Plus, you get eye pains from watching too long. I would not want to have Advil next to me every time I watch 3D television. And... Isnt TV blinding enough? :|

Unrelated, anyone see the Sharp Quattron? It actually adds a lot of color to the picture and makes it look way better. Why aren't they focusing on that instead of this 3D stuff? Comparison with RGB on the left and RGBY on the right:

Because 3D is (allegedly) where all the money is.

Because its advertising is much more dull: phrases like "crisp colors" and "high contrast", which for modern displays I believe are specs just tacked onto every box, and "we finally have yellow"; compared to the fancy appearance 3D has.

I'm not too sure how significant the actual effect is for that kind of screen, either. Camera photographs of screens tend to be inaccurate simulation of how a human eye would perceive the same image, so I feel like the contrast would be much less noticeable in real life. And yellow isn't too popular of a color.
