Mario & Sonic Rivalry

So... It seems that forever, there has been a rivalry between Mario and Sonic. All over the internet, people claimed that they were rivals for whatever reason, and then they got their own game together as rivals. But how did it start?
Before Mario & Sonic at the Olympic games, I see no connection between the 2 heroes, not including a bunch of fan-made thingamahoosins all over the internet. I mean, some Donkey Kong game had Sonic's shoes in them or something, but what did Mario do? What did Sonic do? How did they become rivals? Human Carpenter/Plumber that jumps a lot, red, and a ultra fast hedgehog that doesn't have the ability to swim (until recently), blue, one jumps on a flagpole and enters castles at the end of their levels, one spins a sign and changes it to his face somehow, sometimes jumps on stuff to free animals. I see nothing connecting the two, yet Nintendo and Sega saw enough rivalry to give them their own games together. CONFUSION.
How did they become rivals? Hell, while we're at it, how did the internet craze of their rivalry start? (The same way probably)

It was because back in the day, Sega didn't just make games; they made consoles. And before Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft, it was Nintendo Vs. Sega. Sega was the big player in the console war back in that time. Mario became Nintendo's mascot with Super Mario Bros, and Sonic became Sega's "cooler" counter to Mario, and they effectively have been rivals since then.

I'm really surprised you didn't already know this, JrDude, even if you never played a Sega console yourself. This is fairly common knowledge in video gaming.
