Why is Mario running as fast as Sonic?

In the trailer for Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, Mario is seen running as fast as Sonic. Now how can a human be able to run as fast as Sonic?

I guess it's to make the game more fair. I mean, it wouldn't be all that fun if Sonic could win everything, would it?

It would be unbalanced. Mario would win all the jumping contests, Sonic would win all the running contests, etc.

Statistically, Mario should be slower than Sonic. Sonic dominates in speed, while Mario is balanced in all-around. Sonic's only competitor, on the Mushroom Kingdom side, would be Yoshi because he too is a speedster.
