I don't get the story of Smash....

So in the first game there's a kid who owns Nintendo character dolls and makes them fight each other until they attack him (the master hand) in the single player? And in Melee they are now trophies why come to life and fight each other and fight the master hand even though he doesn't own them like the dolls? I at least get the story of Brawl. ;D
