Talking on the internet != writing skills.

My writing is atrocious.  However, I spell everything correctly.  I know how to suck up to teachers on essays, and my english marks this semester average each other out to about a 91%.

When writing casually on the internet, most people don't bother to put in apostrophes or to capitalize words.  Why?  Because you can tell what they're saying anyways, and it therefore doesn't matter.

I'm all for being a grammar freak, but not on message boards.  it doesn't matter.
Exactly! Why can't people be more like you? Sure, it may be fun to make fun of other's poor grammar on the internet, but there's so many people on the internet who don't use their grammar that it's not really fun to do so.

How hard is it to take those 2 extra seconds to type properly?

Why does it matter if I capitalize my Is?  I mean, I do it naturally anyways, but I don't really think it matters at all.  Not everyone can average at 86 like I can, and for some, it takes quite a longer time to capitalize their sentences.

My point is that it just doesn't matter.  You can still tell what I'm saying when I don't capitalize the start of my sentences.  I hate it when people misspell words, that's what a spellchecker is for (though i don't think there is one here), but most people can spell fine anyways.  If it irks people, yeah, I'll make sure my grammar is perfect, but on a casual message board like this one, it doesn't matter.

Now if you would ask me the same thing about more serious forums, I'd have a different opinion.  But since you're on a lax forum, it's not something that is that important.

do you mean like a private teacher you go to see after school so she can help you with your homework. Those are called tutors not home school. But if you really mean home school then your a lucky kid 1 hour only 1 time a week. Your going to fail at life thought.

When you can type like this just as easily while making it that much more easy to read?  It also doesn't make you look like a moronic twelve year old who can't tell the difference between their, there and they're.

But if you take the time to properly spell, why not take the time to be grammatically correct as well?

because some people are too lazy to do so, that's what it comes down to.  you can tell what I'm saying regardless, and the point of forums is to get information across.  as long as you're doing that in a convenient matter, why does it matter?  Some people take forever to type, because they don't know how to type, or use the shift keps properly (in which case they should take classes, but anyways...).  I think that as long as you're getting your point across, it doesn't irk me.  Nobody is marking you, you're not talking to someone who is judging you in ways that you should deem important.

But overall, it just encourages bad typing and grammar.  When typing actual papers, you will do that much better and have far few mistakes if you constantly type properly.  It trains your mind better, instead of slacking off when it's not as "important" to be grammatically correct.

(RANDOM APPEARANCES FTW)

Because it just matters. It absolutely matters.

Maybe I'm the one who's different, or I'm the one with the problem, but I can't take people seriously unless their posts are at least reasonably acceptable grammatically.

I'm not saying that everyone should type like a scholar, but unless they meet at least middle school requirements, I can't take them seriously, and justifiably so. I learned how to write with proper grammar when I was in 6th grade. By then, I had enough knowledge from English classes to say what I wanted to say while keeping to the rules of English 90% of the time. Sure, I used a word wrong occasionally, but not often.
6th grade. Some on here may be young, but I really doubt that more than 1% of the members here are younger than or at the age of 11.

Look at some of the grammatically incorrect posts in this thread.
Can you honestly take that seriously? Would you trust that as a source? Would you enjoy having a conversation with someone who spoke like that?
Proper grammar just makes everything look so much more refined and intelligent, and for such a cheap price. The only thing you sacrifice is a little bit of your time. You gain so much more back in the form of intelligence and sociability. People will want to talk to you. You look "smart".

It matters.

Matt

I'm not gonna bother reading every1's posts, but err u have C's and home schooled??!?!? and have accessible Internet? U should have A's...

1. I don't care about my grammar on the internet, just my spelling. :P
2. it is more like an individual study education than homeschooling
3. wouldn't an individual study where you have a weeks worth of homework help you at least a little with responsibility and self discipline (which it is for me)
4. those grades were from a while ago, and my teacher game me the hardest books, its been like 3 weeks since then and I've been doing MUCH better grade wise.
