PLEASE HELP! I got stuck in Conker's BFD on N64!

I need someone to help me through the part with the dogfish. You can't attack when you're in the water, so I need help on how to defeat him please. Thanks.

It's a lengthy process. You don't actually fight him. There's a hole you swim into down there near him, and then you find this machine you're supposed to use to shorten the dogfish's chain so he can't get the catfish. You have to find the cogs for the machine...and then after the dogfish's chain is shortened, you have to go through the lengthy process of finding your reward inside the safe after the catfish open it for you...and then some other stuff happens that I won't spoil for you.
