Stores open really early and do outrageous sales all on the day after Thanksgiving in the US.  It's called Black Friday because a lot of shoppers get really crazy trying to take advantage of all the stores.  Sometimes violence can occur, just for the latest products.

I don't feel like waking up at 5:00 AM to get killed.  Plus, if I were going, I'd probably just stay up all night instead of sleep for 2 hours.

You already failed: people who get up at 5:00 AM get nothing. Last year I was there at 10:30PM the previous night. Lines start forming at 12:00 midnight. It's fierce man, with police officers and all.
