Mine would have to be Half-Life 2, closely followed up by Team Fortress 2 and the Unreal Tournament series.
I also have to give a mention to Nerf Arena Blast, they managed to make a decent non-violent FPS using Nerf guns. :D
(Look it up, it has a decent following.)

Team Fortress 2 without a doubt.
Half-Life 2 is pretty close there, but it's not multiplayer (except for Deathmatch, but I haven't played that for any significant amount of time).
Goldeneye 007 for the N64. ^_^
Half-Life 2 no doubt.

I don't play many FPS (Mainly due to the fact THAT EACH ONE IS "M") until I started....ugh...Halo 2. But I was lost and confused. After all, I had never played a FPS other than that.
Until....
It's impossible to go back to Halo & Halo 2 after being spoiled by TF2 and CoD.

NUUUU SUFFER MY WRATH.
Different kinds of FPS, can't compare them all together.
For tactics, Rainbow Six. For orginality, Bioshock. For multiplayer, gotta be Gears of War or Unreal Tournament III
I'm not a big fan of shooters, since they're all the same to me. However, TimeSplitters is amazing.
Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando. It had a first person mode. :3

Don't get me wrong, shooters are just as good as any other game, but I really have more fun controlling a hoard of dead dragon thingies over running around not quite aimlessly, but still running around, ducking often and throwing out a frag or two every so often.

I hate most RPGs, because they all have the same cliches, and I really hate most turn-based games.
This is the year 2008, not 1988. There's no need for turn-based gameplay.
You really should try Call of Duty 4, there is a decent amount of strategy involved.

Gratuitous violence is not funny to me, even in an arcadey game like Painkiller where all you do is kill.
Sometimes it's just fun to ignore a story line and plow through hoards of a zombie onslaught. Other times, it's more fun to slowly sneak around stealthily and silently assassinate the bad guy to advance the story more.

You can tell I don't play many FPS's.
actually, RS was fun, but it could have been better

CoD 4 > Halo 3.
why?
multiple classes > 18 master chiefs.
I like Halo just because CoD4 confuses me.
Goldeneye 007
Gears of War
Conkers Bad Fur Day (multiplayer)
that one that took place during WWII....oh wait! (lol)
I'm not really into FPS. I like Rpg more but i have played a few great FPS games.

I bet Kaz would probably say Banjo-Tooie. It had multiplayer FPS.
I would say Goldeneye 007, but ever since I got Battlefield 2, I'd have to pick it. :x
Portal. With that being said, I haven't played very many FPSs.
