Poll
Question:
Read Post
Option 1: Do away with.
Option 2: Keep.
The subject matter is doing a de-restoration on NSider post counts. This would accompany the rank overhaul and theme redux that will likely be going down tonight. If we deflate the posts, we'd also then change the post based ranks a bit - at the very least we'd lower the posts down in proportion to avg. posts lost.
For me, the decision comes down to reality. We aren't NSider, and accepting their (and NS2's) post counts seems dumb. Why don't we have a community based around itself? But, I leave the decision in your hands...then the staffs.
The original note from Totla:
QuoteAlso, a rank related suggestion: Get rid of the post count restorations from nsider, and fix the rank post count requirements accordingly.
A note from Hostile:

No we don't. SMF 2 added a lovely mod (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1136)to recalculate post counts if they were altered at all. All we have to do is click a button and viola, everyone is reset to their actual post count here.
Additionally, no post on this site will be lost or altered in any way.
Totla: Re-vote because not caring shouldn't be an option, and because it was evenly divided three ways, and because of new information.
Just do away with it. Post count doesn't matter at all. Especially not when you're getting it restored from other sites. The only reason it even slightly mattered on NS was due to the fact you didn't get all the forum features at a low level. Just get rid of it :/
Also, check your pm's. Wtf happened?
Erm, this is a stupid idea. I can see what you mean, but all the post count is is an arbitrary number, so no matter what it is, it's silly.
Plus, this doesn't affect me :3

The problem I really only see is that it intercourse s with stats. Of our top 10 posters, 3 are actually active. Most of them haven't been here in months, half of them in over a year.
Also, I don't see why you'd choose here to cling to your memories of Oldsider.
I mostly don't care, however I do like having the highest rank amongst us peeps. XD
I'm mostly indifferent, but I say do away with it.
It's an arbitrary matter.
In place of it, make it so we can choose from an assortment of pre-made colors. Seriously.
Being able to make my name red would be a thing I'd LOOOOOOVE
You won't ever have the ability to make your name red, pending Vaati's (and my own) rule stays true. Admins should always be easily id'd, and as such, user ranks shouldn't be red (unless a very different shade, which is possible).

I actually only had 1700 posts on Nsider, so I'd still have 5000+. I'd say go for it.
I don't really care, everyone knows I had the highest postcount on NSider when it closed on here (and LF does not count since he isn't here).
I'd say keep them as they are now, just dont revive any more for new oldsider members (unless you already stopped doing that)
I like my 48,285 posts. I recently added 20k+ to that on NSider 2 because I'm awesome.
But honestly, retroactively removing it isn't the best idea, since you'd have to go in and edit every member who had it edited to the proper number.
And in the end, who gives a poop.

I voted Nooo Keep, but I didn't know we use NS2 postcounts. That's a bit extreme.
This forum is "Nsider Forums/Friend Code Database". Using Nsiders postcounts is fine. We may be our own community but we spawn from there and FCD.
I don't agree with using NS2 postcounts though. Any posts from a rival forum shouldn't count.

No! Hostile you are supposed to make it seem like a 7 hour ordeal of clicking things over and over.
Not to mention, the easy and effortless recount forum statistics. So really it's one click to download. Two to install. One to remove. One to recount. 5 clicks. Not bad or painful - and far more accurate to what we really are.
However, it should be noted that with that many users opposed to something as such, I would be hesitant to do so.

I have never been fond of the post count restorations, as I don't like things that falsify stats or make people look more active than they are.
I chose indifferent. I made somewhere around 2,200 posts on OldSider, and I pretty much doubled that here.

A bit less than 2/3, considering that excludes the group with the highest number of votes
Having checked this poll numerous times, "Do away with" seems to have maintained a status about 2~4 votes higher than "NOOO KEEP" with indifferent being in between them.
Also, the poll doesn't allow changing votes and, judging by the posts in this thread, some people probably chose to keep thinking it would be a lot of trouble before hostile explained that it's an easy to use function.
Anyways, I vote to do away with. This is good in my opinion because:
It makes the various ranks easier to obtain for people who weren't on Nsider and other new members
It fixes our screwed up statistics
Unlike NS2, we aren't trying to extend and replicate the experience of Nsider, but rather be a mostly separate forum.

While I agree we are staff for a reason, this is a very important part of how the forum operates. Just deciding for the users - based on a closed group whose ranks don't change as they post hardly seems fair.
As extreme as this may sound, I say if we really want to "be a separate forum" from Nsider, we have to change the name (or at least the first half of the name) of the site.
Or, accept that we started as an Nsider Forum, and keep the post count of those who were members.

Well even if it's just for show it's probably a good idea to ask peoples opinions about this sort of thing anyway because there's always a possibility of a huge backlash if major things change/happen without any prior warning at all. (I'm pretty sure that it's happened here before) And this way you can at least soften the blow or make users think they were useful.
And I'm not implying that Mack or any other staff is doing this "just for show," though I personally wouldn't care at all if they were.

As far as the ranks go I'm also indifferent but I don't want us to drift to far away from being a video game based forum concentrating mostly on nintendo.

Even though the point of the matter is the fact we aren't Oldsider and therefore why should we have posts from it.
Do away with, it matters not to me.
I re-voted to get rid of post count restoration. Sure, let's break away from our Oldsider roots. We already have new ranks. Why be reminded of a community that everyone says sucked, and left us without warning? Also, the "replacement" Oldsider has done nothing good to this place.
I say, thanks to Oldsider for sprouting this forum, but it's time for us to leave the nest. We need to spread out our own wings and fly, which means goodbye to the stable life that we once all knew. So, goodbye old post ranks, goodbye old post counts, and hello to a brand new world. Our world, as a community, that we can hopefully make better than Oldsider, and at least better than NS2 in our morals.
Just because we've expanded and drifted away from NSider doesn't mean we need to cut it off completely.

You mean those posts that are no longer in existence except in some poor attempt to recover them from Google's cache? That number is meaningless here, and none of your Oldsider posts still exist. I don't see how you can cling to something you can't even look at online anymore.
Those posts
don't count because they aren't there to be counted.
But the posts were counted in the beginning of NSF, there's nothing wrong with keeping them.
Why are you people so against keeping it? It's an arbitrary number, it means nothing, zip, nada.

No. When an account gets deleted, the posts remain (unless during the deletion process we chose the option to delete them) and all that happens is the the user information is gone. The posts remain, but appear as guest posts. However SMF allows us to reassign these posts to any user. Nothing happens to the old accounts posts, and all we have to do is reassign them to your current account.

Because it's annoying and give a false sense of activity. You've made almost 2,600 posts here, which is still a considerable amount, so I don't see why you're worried about losing the current number.

We're probably going to redo ranks at some point here (there's supposed to be a rank election happening allegedly) so that may change.
Here's to 14647 (give or take) posts that won't even be a memory anymore.
Actually, I guess this is just as well, because some people are keeping their 50,000 posts from Oldsider and if you wanna make a fuss about postcounts, its kind of unfair. now that i think of it, they should just reflect our posting on THIS forum. OK..
I'm ready. do it *closes eyes*
Not only will there be a rank election, and not only will we retool the post counts, there are also user selectable ranks. The last is a fantastic option at getting out of your spam flavored rank.
Do we get to pick the colors too? :3
For...?
Rank election? Not likely. User selectable has 3 ranks, 2 colors. Two green and a pink.
Try not to use as many ugly colors this time (not that all of them are ugly).
*cough*
If you're going to take our posts, do it already. ;__;
This is going to be one of those things isn't it?
