If Sonic continues with this rate...which is going to be Mario's rival then? :O
This ones obvious, its Master Cheif. He's getting unbelievably popular, and he's for a competing system. he's pretty much Microsoft's Mascot by now.
Cheif can't be Mario's rival since htey're completely different genres. That'd be like saying Pokemon is Snake's rival...they're completely different. It has to be hte same dmeographic or genre to be "rivals" like how Mario and Sonic were. Same market, same type of game. I'd have to say the closest one is Rachet series.

Banjo-Kazooie. Although that might change soon with the new "vehicle" stuff in Banjo-Threeie.

No....for three main reasons:
1. Microsoft/Rare can't make games worth a crap anymore
2. Banjo was never in direct competition since they were previously Nintnedo
3. Rachet and Clank is actually good. Better than anything Rare could ever come up with.

Hmm, I think Sonic's games are WAY too different than Mario's.

That wasn't his point.

The point is that both Mario and Sonic had games that were platformers and appealed to the same group of people, so they were rivals. Master Chief cannot be a rival to Mario as MC is in a FPS and Mario is still in a platformer, and while Mario appeals to almost everyone, mostly kids, teens, and young adults, Halo appears more to teens and adults.

I mean character wise, Mario, Pacman, Sonic, and Master Cheif are now the most recognizable icons in gaming (added to the "hall of game" exibit in a muesium i cant remember the name of at the moment). The Halo games did what was previously thought to be impossible after Mario, become freakishly popular even on the first game!

Because they are the ones in the hall of game... :|

Pacman has been a video game character longer than all of those, and he still stars in alot of games today! He's the longest running video game character who is still in new games, and thats why

Guys, it's obvious:  Mario's rival is Link.  Link's way cooler and has better games, but that out-of-shape plumber just keeps getting in the way of Link's quest to become Nintendo's mascot.  Thankfully, Kirby is there to help Link in his plots for Nintendo domination--he even arranged for Link to be the biggest character on the cover of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which is made by Kirby's company, HAL.  In addition to that, Kirby invited Sonic to Brawl in the hopes that the blue hedgehog would help take down his former rival.

Umm no... Mario is Nintendo's mascot because of what he did for the company, become the most well known and best selling game series in all the world. Plus Mario games reinvened video games several times! If not for Mario 64, Link's best game (Ocarina of Time) could never have been possible. I also would MUCh rather play a Mario game than Zelda. They bring me more joy and always put a huge smile on my face!
