Evidently Sony doesn't like Pirates.

Since Christmas of this year, my family and I have had a DVD player that can burn DVDs. It worked fine, but my little brother jammed something in it, evidently, and when my mom shoved a knife in the tray to try and get it out, she snapped something, breaking the engine that brought the disc tray out.

So, today, my mom spends 180$ on a sleek Sony DVD player that has the same capabilities, hooks it up, works fine, playing wise.

My mom went back to her normal routine of going to Tivo, selecting a movie, and burning it, so we can save money for useful things, like, you know, food, bills, etc.

She picks Resident Evil: Extinction, puts the DVD in, presses Record.

30 seconds into the movie, the recording stops. A little box pops up with this delightful message.

"Cannot record copyrighted pictures. Stopping recording."

My mom has this dumbfounded look on her face, and goes to the manual. After about 10 minutes of skimming we find a delightful little paragraph.

"Copyrighted pictures:

This DVD player cannot record copyrighted material. If a guard signal is found, the recording will stop immediately."

I was laughing hysterically at this point, and my mom was mad off that 90% of our movie collecting just went down the drain.

So this doesn't get locked for a MySpace thread, discuss ironic things in the world of technology that have happened to you.

I wouldn't consider this a MySpace thread.  "I just got a GF!" "I got a 100 on my test!" "My dog died ;_;" are all MySpace threads.

Just torrent the movies you need.

It said something about not recording stuff from a GH rip-off, but I don't think GNR gave them permission to make money off of a midi Paradise City...

You honestly expected something like that to work?

The company who made your old DVD player were idiots because they didn't put an anti-piracy program in it.

Get a cheap DVD player from a company too stupid to put an anti-piracy program in their DVD player. Like Coby.

Our old one was Panasonic. I really didn't think they were that bad >_>

As of now, I told my mom about the sending in the 360 thing and that I want a desktop, so I suggested that we use this laptop to record from our DVR, then burn the discs from the laptop. She was basically indifferent about this, so I dunno what we're going to do.

The important thing is that this DVD player has the open/close button in a stupid place, so my little brother can't stick a puzzle piece or whatever was lodged in the old one in this one >_>

You could always BitTorrent.

I think if you have a DVR Cable box you can record anything, then take out the drive and use it on your computer; I've been wondering if that works.

Many old items are better than the new one. That's irony enough.

Which is why my Dreamcast basically has no form of copy protection whatsoever.

I think my DVR cable box has a USB port. I tried putting in my flash drive one day, nothing.

Throw an external drive in the port and see what it does.
