Title: Most underrated/overrated Mario game?
Post by: Tupin on January 05, 2009, 06:45:45 PM
In your opinion.

Most underrated: Super Mario Sunshine.

While the mechanic of FLUDD was not liked by some, I personally loved this games personality. Everything about it, from the graphics, to the music, to the locales, it all was perfect for a Mario game. My only gripe is one thing. Have you SEEN the beta of it with the huge Delfino Plaza? Looks even better than the game we got.

Most overrated: Pretty much all of the Nintendo made Mario games are awesome, but I must say, Mario Party has gotten VERY old. Mario Party 4 was like the last really good one, they need to either start making it themselves or give it to another second party.

What about yours?

I'm not going to include spin-offs, because only Kart, Golf, and Parties 1-4 were any good.

Underrated: Mario 2 (it was still a fun game)
Overrated: Mario galaxy

I swear, I thought it was just okay until Nintendo made that GARBAGE DS port.

I think it was just so they could say, "SEE? It IS as powerful as an N64!"  >=(

Most Underrated: Super Mario 2 (US) - I always thought this was a great game.

Most Overrated: Super Mario 64 - I just can't get into it for some reason. I've tried so many times! I've had more fun with Galaxy than 64.

Mario Tennis 64 was awesome and both Strikers are pretty good, I don't know what you're talking about...
I've never been much of a golf fan, so I wouldn't know about that.

Underrated: Either Luigi's Mansion or Sunshine. Both had awesomeadditions to the game mechanics.

Overrated: Galaxy. It's pretty easy, and while it's pretty good, it's not that good.

Underrated: Super Mario Land. Few know of the awesomeness that is this game.

Overrated: I gotta say, Super Mario World. I still like it (A lot), but it most certanly is not the best Mario game ever.

Underrated: Mario Galaxy - Everyone is saying it's overrated, but look at that, that's just proving that it's not liked, thus, not overrated. I thought it was a GREAT game, the weird gravity, the races with that Galactic Mario, the icescatting thing was probably my favorite for some reason, the only thing I didn't like is having to start ALL OVER with Luigi to get everything the game had.

Overrated: Mario RPG - Yes, it was a great game, but it is liked a little too much, I liked the game, but it just didn't draw me in like everyone made me think it would.

I don't know how anyone can say Super Mario 64 is overrated. Sure the DS port ruined it, but I don't think you should count that, just count the original. It deserves all the hype.

Most overrated: Galaxy.

Most underrated: Super Mario Brothers 2 (US).

The DS port wasn't bad at all. When the DS was first released, it was the only game worth mentioning that was available for it at launch. What exactly "ruined" the game? The most common complaint is the lack of an analog stick, but I find the D-pad to work just fine. I don't need an analog stick to enjoy the game.

I still play some of the mini-games.

And as for the thread topic:

Most overrated: Super Mario 64

The game is wonderful no doubt, most games that are "overrated" tend to be. It's just that people tend to call it a near perfect game and...that is far from the truth.

Most underrated: Super Mario Sunshine

People constantly ninny about the FLUDD crap and how the game wasn't as similar to Mario 64 as "it should have been". It was innovative, incredibly fun, and actually, next to Super Mario Bros. 3, this game is my favorite Mario game. It had its flaws, but they weren't significant enough for this game to be bad.

Underrated: Probably Super Mario Sunshine or Luigi's Mansion.
Super Mario Sunshine was different, and pretty fun. I loved F.L.U.D.D. :) The only thing I didn't like was the blue coins. They were kind of annoying, too.
Luigi's Mansion was fun, too.

Overrated: It's obviously Super Mario RPG.
I don't get it. I played the game for the SNES. Everybody makes it seem like the best game, and it really wasn't. Don't get me wrong, it was a good game. But not as great as everyone makes it seem.

It wasn't bad, but that's the problem.

It wasn't bad.

That's all that can be said about it? Not great? That was the problem, the game was just average, and when compared to the greatness of 64, it doesn't cut it. Plus, it completely takes away the nostalgia factor, which isn't that big of a deal, but still...

It ruined the game, because looking at a DS for a couple of stars is nothing compared to staying up all night, in the light of a television screen, playing a kick ass game. The DS version never had the same charm.

Of course the DS version never had the same charm. Ports of games never have the same charm as the originals. In what ways, do you think Nintendo could have ported the game, and retained the same charm?

Also, nostalgia factor is another point I should have made. Nostalgia leads to biased statements. Not to mention, you can't really "take away" nostalgia. The way you remember the game is entirely up to you. Those memories are yours, and I don't quite see how a port of a game you adored should impact your opinion over said game.

Yes, I do believe that they were capable of porting it and retaining the same charm, may games/franchises have done it.

I know nostalgia leads to biased statements. I'll edit this later, I gotta do some stuff.

Super Mario Sunshine as well. I thought it was pretty fun. Luigi's mansion wasn't that bad either.

I absolutely love Luigi's Mansion; beat it 4 times.

Galaxy seems way too overrated for me. Wall-jumping takes no skill, nor does much of anything. It's kinda dumbed down difficulty-wise, for casuals, when Mario 64 was beatable when I was 9... Galaxy I've only gotten 35 stars cuz it's too boring.

And yeah, SMRPG I've tried playing. I really hate it. Dunno why, it just doesn't do it for me.

Underrated:Sunshine,and luigi's mansion.
Sunshine wasn't a bad game at all.In fact it took me longer to get 100% in it than galaxy and 64.
I haven't played luigi's mansion but a lot of people I know(and what iv'e read online)say it sucked. But from the gameplay I watched on youtube and playing some parts at my cousins house it's not realy a bad game. Not  nintendo's finest but not it's worst eaither.

Overrated:Super mario 64.
I liked it and it's one of my fav 64 games but it's not the best game ever.

Um....it doesn't have to be the best game ever. AND HAVE FREAKIN' GRAMMAR! [facepalm/]

Underrated: Definately Sunshine. While it may not be top notch like 64, SMS does not get the recognition it rightfully deserves.
Overrated: Mario Party. I mean seriously, 8 GAMES! I mean 64/Sunshine/Galaxy have similar plots overall, but not 8 games, all of which are based on the exact same thing.

How was Super Mario RPG over rated!?!?  I remember when that game came out, and when I got it for my SNES!  It was one of the funnest games I plaid on my old SNES.  Maybe for some kids now days, its not that great, but back in the day it was really fun!

Hmmm... an interesting thread and lot of interesting posts... It seems a lot of people are saying they think a game is overrated because apparently it's not the "best" Mario Game. But many of the games mentioned revolutionized Mario or did something unique and really in my oppinoin can't be called "overrated". To me, being overrated means people loved it and rave about it over and over yet didn't have much to it.

Mario 64: Mario's 1st steps in 3D and introduced the whole idea of collecting stars. While it's a bit unfortunite the idea of Star collecting has stuck with Mario for a few games now, I don't really see how this could be overrated. More like underrated since so many people here appear to dislike it.

Mario Sunshine/Luigi's Mansion: They broke the rules of saving a kidnapped princess and simply jumping over goombas to get to the goal to move onto the next stage. These both changed the game play of what is "supposed" to be Mario by adding things like being a Ghostbuster or the 1 man Street Sweeper. It seems a lot of people are arguing back and forth, so it seems like it's right where it should be.

Mario Galaxy: This won game of the year for a reason. While a lot of people here are claiming it's overrated. This game brought new dynamics to Mario we have not seen before and brought him back to a style we have not seen since Mario 64 by not having some sort of device from E. Gadd. With new Power-Ups, Psycho Gravity changes, levels being about both timing and strategy, and various puzzles, this game was different from the other all other Mario Games. And from all the complaints against it, sounds to me as though it's underrated here.

But now it is time for my oppinoin of which games are over and underrated.

Underrated: Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
-The 1st Mario game on the Gameboy to feature a save option and was a major step up from Super Mario Land. While using an Enhanced Mario 3 type of engine, the game resembles more of a Super Mario World for Gameboy. Also in this game was a 1-of-a-kind power-up we have not seen since; The Carrot which gave Mario the ability to rapid jump while the button was held, glide in the air, and jump higher than normal. Personally, I'd like to see this power-up make a return some day. Also, this game introduced a character who has been with us ever since, Wario.

Overrated: Japan Super Mario Bros 2 (US: Lost Levels)
-I hear a lot about people saying Super Mario Bros 2 in US was a completely different game, not even supposed to be Mario and blah blah blah. Then I hear some people say "OMG! 'Lost Levels' is so much more better as Mario 2 cause it's more like Mario". Well I would hope me of all people would already know these things. However, for those that haven't played the "REAL" Mario 2, I'll tell you that I'd take the US Mario 2 any time. The "Lost Levels" Mario 2 was basically Super Mario Bros with new levels and a poison mushroom that hurts you. While I know a lot of people don't think this game is the best, it didn't really do anything new. When comparing which Mario 2 was better, US or Japan's, I think US takes the cake by having new enemies and the ability to grab/throw things.

Underrated: MARIO TENNIS AND MARIO GOLF, LIKE SERIOUSLY.
I have beat those games for both the GBA and the GCN so many times, if the Wii/DS version doesn't have WIFI  This is going to be one unhappy fanatic.  Yet online, I never see any mention of these games.  I personally loved them, although after playing them so much they tend to get easy...

Ok, people, flamewar and spamwar needs to die, so... BACK ON TOPIC!

So: The Super Mario Baseball games I would also consider very underrated.

Extremely. Everyone only cares about Galaxy, MK, and Brawl.

Oh yeah, almost everyone states that Mario Galaxy wasn't that great and is overrated. So yeah, it's TOTALLY overrated. [/sarcasm]

That usually stems from the journalists (if they can even be called that anymore) give it near perfects and dont' complain about any of the game's faults.
Basically suffering from GTA and Halo syndrome X_X;;

I 100% Agree with Tuppy.

Most underrated was Super Mario Sunshine. A wonderful game with beautiful backgrounds and fun game play.

Most overrated was Mario Party, the fact they make more and more of the same game over and over is painful.

Overrated: Galaxy, an easy game that was just okay.

And didn't they give mario party to a 3rd party developer, mario party 8 was made by hudson soft. Mario party 8? That many.... that game is getting old.

Underrated: Super Mario Sunshine
Ties with Galaxy for best Mario game easily
Maybe even ahead of Galaxy, just for the badassness.

Overrated: None really

Overated- Super Mario Galaxy.  It was a great game with a lot of potential, but it got boring and repetitive after a while.  It was too linear and flat-out obvious.  Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine had a similar concept, but something about them kept me wanting to play more.  Playing through SMG as Mario and then as Luigi was enough for me.

Underated- Super Mario Sunshine.  It had beautiful backgrounds and a unique concept.  And Shadow Mario.

But Halo actually pulls it off pretty well.

And there are a couple GTA games that were pretty good. Example: Vice City Stories.

I never said there werent any good games for the series. Problem is when there IS a bad game, the "journalist" never give it a lower score, while when a series starts going in the right direction (Sonic Unleashed), they pan it because of recent failures.
GTA4 was probably one of the worst games I played last year, and yet sites and magazines gave it 10's across the board. I give it a 6 at best because of shotty controls, graphics were dull and bland, car driving was piss poor, missions were also bland, no sense of humor like previous games, and we can't forget "NICO COUSIN!!!!" *ugh*
